News from around the Parish
ST. SWITHUN’S PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL
At the July 2016 PCC meeting, the PCC re-confirmed the decision to proceed with the installation of Solar Panels to the South roof, at that time, it was anticipated that approx ¼ of the lead roof be repaired.
However when the project started it was discovered that the lead had not been fixed according to the (current) recommended practice and as a result the lead had sustained significant damage since the early 1980-s when it was last renewed.
After a detailed report from our Inspecting Architect, the PCC resolved – at a special meeting on 31st August 2016 – to proceed with the replacement of the lead to the whole of the South Aisle roof. At the end of September 2016, the Restoration Trust voted to make a major donation to this project from their funds.
In the middle of October 2016, Our Architect advised that the underlying timbers on the South Aisle were deficient and needed replacing and that there were also significant volumes of rubble in the roof void that also needed removal.
Detailed reports to the PCC continue to be prepared by Frank Allum and Lynn Ellis has written a comprehensive report as to why the Parish has undertaken this project – ST SWITHUN’S GOES GREEN - in the October 2016 edition of the Parish e-newsletter.
The pictures on this noticeboard – taken at the end of October 2016 – are seeking to show; the replacement timbers being fitted, an indication of the work still to do, an example of the rubble in the roof void and the tarpaulins in place intending to cover wet weather (not always successful).
From a site visit today with the Architect, the new lead is almost 50% laid and the replacement timbers approx 70% laid. The previous estimate is finish – February / March 2017 is hopefully ‘worst’ case with a ‘best case’ of a finish in the January / February 2017 timescales, subject to the weather experienced going forward.
Thank you for your patience and understanding, we recognise the inconvenience of dust sheets (and stronger) on the south pews – they will be removed for Christmas services.
If you have any queries, please refer to myself or Kate, or to Frank Allum, our Fabric Projects Manager.
With thanks, Tony Cox / Church Warden – dated 28th November 2016.
